On August 27th, 2013, held at AHEPA Hospital, under the auspices of the Internal Medicine Society of Northern Greece and the organization of the First Propedeutic Medical Department of Aristotles University of Thessaloniki, (Director-Professor A.J. Hatzitolios) and collaboration of Hospital administration, a scientific event entitled:
&Aristotelis dvanced ndoscopy Course 2013:
Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for esophageal achalasia.
Magnification endoscopy and Endoscopic Histology.
International Registration, International Multicenter Trial, Thessaloniki-Yokohama (Japan) collaboration&

During the course, Professor Haruhiro Inoue, from the Showa University, Northern Yokohama Hospital, Japan, performed, for the first time in Northern Greece, two live cases of PerOral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), an innovative method for the treatment of esophageal achalasia, in two patients 32- and 52-years-old respectively, with the collaboration of Hospital Gastrenterologists: Dr. G. Germanidis, N. Eleftheriadis and A. Protopapas.

Professor H. Inoue, is the one who performed POEM for the first time in 2008, as a definite treatment for esophageal achalasia and since then more than 1500 POEM cases have been performed worldwide (mostly in Japan), with very good short and long-term results, tend to make POEM the definite treatment of choice for esophageal achalasia.

Doctors from different specializations followed the live demonstrations through a closed circuit from operation room.

Two lectures were also followed, regarding the POEM method, its advantages in comparison to other treatment options with high risk of failure (pharmaceutical, surgery) and the most recent clinical data for POEM, as well as a lecture on magnification endoscopy and endoscopic histology, two developments in digestive endoscopy: gastroscopy, colonoscopy, which significantly increases the possibility of diagnosis of early gastrointestinal cancer. At the end of the course a certificate was granted.

Closing remarks

Closing this exciting course, I would like to thank once again, Prof. Haruhiro Inoue, all collaborators who helped in the succesfful realization of this seminar, the Direction of AHEPA University Hospital, all the clinics who co-operate in the course, and all colleauges who followed the course.

Totally more than 30 doctors from different specializations attended this seminar, who I consider they have learned the last modern data on esophageal achalasia and the definitive endoscopic treatment by the revolutionized, innovative POEM technique.

am grateful to Prof. H. Inoue for all the knowledge he taught us and I think that our collaborator Gastroenterologists, Dr. Georgios Germanidis, Dr. Nikolas Eleftheriadis, and Dr. Andreas Protopapas, can know apply the POEM technique to patients with esophageal achalasia in Thessaloniki.

I hope to continue the collaboration with Prof. H. Inoue in the context of International Mutlicenter Registration for POEM, which has been presented here.

Prof. H. Inoue, I would like you to tranfer our best wishes to your World Famous Department, the Digestive Disease Center of Showa University of Northern Yokohama Hospital, in long-distant Japan, the Land of The Rising Sun, Nihhon.
