The Labïratory of Research and Clinical Applications in Ophthalmology (LaRCAO), A’ Ophthalmology Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AHEPA Hospital, was founded in 2000 by Fotis Topouzis, Assosiate Professor of Opthhalmology. The main research team of the LaRCAO consists of scientists from the fields of Ophthalmology and Medical Informatics , and competent trained technicians. The LaRCAO is a certified member of the European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network (EVICR.net), dedicated to perform clinical research in Ophthalmology with the highest standards of quality.

Main research interests include epidemiology and population-based studies, genetics and genetic epidemiology, imaging technologies, ophthalmic blood flow and clinical trials in 1) glaucoma, 2) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), 3) diabetic retinopathy.

Major research projects conducted at the LaRCAO include: The Thessaloniki Eye Study, the largest population based study on glaucoma and the AMD in Greece and one of the largest in Europe; the EUREYE Study, a pan-European population-based study on AMD; the GlaucoGENE project, a pan-European genetic epidemiology network in glaucoma.

In addition to research, the LaRCAO is dedicated to provide high quality training in glaucoma and medical retina. In this context, several ophthalmologistics from other Greek and foreign institutions are being accepted at the LaRCAO facilities for an observership, involving all relevant research and clinical activities. Moreover the LaRCAO is one of the 7 European Centres participating in the Fellowship Program of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS), which provides travel and fellowship grants to doctors from other European countries for their training in the LaRCAO. In addition, LaRCAO receives ophthalmologists from European countries recipients of the European Society of Ophthalmology “ Educational Grand for ophthalmologists-in-training” . Further to the glaucoma and medical retina fields, LaRCAO has a strong record and expertise in epidemiology .In this context LaRCAO has received in the past a senior scientist from the School of Public Health in Beijing University China for a one year fellowship training in ophthalmic epidemiology, population based studies and biostatistics. This fellowship was supported by a grand from the Greece- China exchanges scholarship program.
