The B' Department of Neurology is housed in the AHEPA University Hospital of Thessaloniki, GREECE.

The Department was founded in 1973 by Prof. of Neurology Ioannis Logothetis, and until 1987 it was settled in the General Hospital of Thessaloniki "Agios Dimitrios". Over the years, the Department has achieved a tradition in both students' and Residents' training through a rich program of undergraduate teaching sessions and post-graduate seminars, as well as a continuous clinical and laboratory education.

The Research activities of the Department are performed in:
1) the Laboratories of Clinical Neuroscience, covering the fields of Electroencephalography (EEG), Video-EEG monitoring with long-recording-periods, Electromyography and Conduction Velocities of Peripheral Nerves, Evoked Potentials (Visual, Somatosensory and Auditory) and Cerebral Vessels Ultrasonography including Extracranial and Intracranial vessels evaluation.
2) the Laboratory of Neuroimmunology and Experimental Neurology, that supports both Clinical and Basic Research studies in Neurology.

The Outpatient Clinics serve the entire range of Neurological patients (via an Appointment) and are structured as follows:
1) the General Neurological Clinics, and
2) the Specialized Outpatient Clinics examining patients with a) Dementia and related disorders, b) Multiple Sclerosis, c) Movement Disorders, d) Dystonia and e) Epilepsy.

We offer medical services to the following neurological patients:

1. With multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating diseases (clinical-neuroimaging evaluation, cerebrospinal fluid protein electrophoresis, evoked potentials, modern therapeutic strategies following international criteria and investigation of patients' disease phenotype with FACS-analysis).

2. With cerebrovascular diseases -stroke episodes, either ischemic or hemorrhagic (clinical-neuroimaging evaluation, extracranial and intracranial Doppler for estimation of the cerebral circulation, continuous Holter monitoring of cardiac rhythm, cooperation with neurosurgeons, cardiologists and hematologists, acute phase management, primary and secondary prevention treatment).

3. With dementing syndromes (clinical-neuroimaging evaluation, neuropsychological assessment, cooperation with physicians in Nuclear Medicine Department for brain SPECT, classification of the dementing process, therapeutic intervention accordingly (Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy's body disease, corticobasal degeneration etc.).

4. With epileptic syndromes, either acute or chronic, classification, video-electroencephalographic 24 hour recordings, as well as therapeutic management using modern pharmaceutical interventions.

5. With peripheral nervous system syndromes, such as polyneuropathies,radiculopathies, myopathies with complete neurophysiological assessment (conduction velocities, evoked potentials, complete needle electromyography), determination of paraneoplastic and anti-gangliosides antibodies in the Neuroimmunology laboratory of our Department and finally, if needed, nerve and/or muscle biopsy in collaboration with the University Department of Pathology-Neuropathology."
