The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AHEPA University Hospital, provides health services in the whole spectrum of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. Regarding heart surgery, beyond the classic techniques, the department is recognized as an International Training Centre on Minimal Extracorporeal Circulation Technology (MECC systems). It is also authorized as National Mechanical Circulatory Support Centre from the Ministry of Health for patients with end-stage heart failure. The department also runs an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) programme for short-term circulatory support in adult cardiac and respiratory failure and serves as a reference centre. It is a member of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) and of the European Registry for patients with Mechanical Circulatory Support (Euromacs).

The department also offers full modern thoracic services. Beyond classic general thoracic surgery (standard and extended procedures), full thoracic endoscopies, cervical video-mediastinoscopies (offered in selected cases as day-case procedures), anterior mediastinotomies and Video-Assisted (VATS) procedures are offered as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. VATS procedures with the 5mm camera, without patient intubation, are used in selected patients with pleural pathology. Treatment of myasthenia Gravis as well as tracheal and esophageal surgery and major chest wall resections and reconstructions (Ravich/Robicsek and Nuss procedures) are performed. Main research fields of the department comprise stem cell therapy combined with mechanical support in ischemic heart failure, use of novel inotropes in heart failure surgery and evaluation of systemic perfusion properties during surgery with MECC systems. In general, the department offers modern cardiothoracic services in an academic environment through a variety of accesses (sternotomy, thoracotomy, cervical incisions and VATS) and is supported by a professional team including cardiothoracic anesthetists, intensivists, physiotherapists and psychologists.
